The turver is a pen filled with ink made from Veenhuizer peat. It can be used to draw, write or count passing days. It thanks its unique colour from the local soil.

Between 1818 and 1960, 8 meters of peat was excavated in Veenhuizen. Although this peat layer has almost disappeared, the soil still contains enough peat to colour the water in Veenhuizen's ditches a deep brown. Thomas Trum extracted the pigments responsible for this discoloration in the soil and used it to produce an ink.

The turver originated with Collectie Veenhuizen and is now part of the VEENlijn.
