LAND&BOUW Fieldlabs
As part of the LAND&BOUW exhibition on Oude Gracht 4 in Veenhuizen, we organized three workshop days together with primary schook Speel en Leer. With all the children from 4-12 years old, we explored the world of regional bio-based materials and the possibilities of sustainable renovation of Veenhuizen’s historic buildings.
The students were introduced to both traditional and contemporary insulation methods and discovered how local natural resources have been used as building materials for generations. Through hands-on experimentation, they transformed hop vines and hop flowers into paper, processed plant fibres using historical tools, twisted them into ropes and used them for weaving. To conclude, the children created their own bio-based panels using different combinations and mixtures of natural materials.
With an educational and experimental approach, the workshops focused on raising awareness on what the build environment, clothing and the objects that surround us are made of. Discovering sustainable alternatives, understanding local resources, and learning through making and discovery. The results are now part of the LAND&BOUW exhibition, demonstrating how heritage, craftsmanship, and sustainability can come together.
